What is Psychodrama?

Psychodrama is the name given by J. L. Moreno to the method he developed for helping people become more spontaneous and so creative in day to day living. It has been developed further by others trained in this approach. The use of the method often involves improvisational dramatic action. The script is written moment by moment out of the concerns and purposes of an individual or group. The leader or director organises production. Practitioners of this powerful method integrate all levels of the human being: their thinking, purposes, imagination, feelings and actions within their social context. It bridges between the individual and society. (Spontaneity is the ability to rise creatively to any situation. Sociometry is the application to researching the structure and patterns of relations in a group. Sociodrama is the application to assessing and developing relationships between groups of people having differing values and identities.)

The Purpose of this Institute

The purpose of this Institute is to develop spontaneity and the sound practice of psychodrama principles in South Australia through conducting training towards practitioner certification by the Australian & New Zealand Psychodrama Association, Inc.

The Nature & Goals of Training

Training with this Institute in group work and action method is found to be of benefit by a wide range of practitioners, managers and business people. Some people complete short courses which enhance their work with people, while others in time undertake a complete certification.

The Australian and New Zealand Psychodrama Association, Inc. (ANZPA) , has established rigorous standards and accredited training institutes throughout Australia and New Zealand. It is a constituent member of PACFA,Inc.
Those who have completed training in this method are certified as Psychodramatists, Sociodramatists, Role-trainers or Sociometrists.

The minimum 2400 hours full training in accredited groups and supervision takes about four years' part-time to complete depending on the abilities and commitment of the trainee. While much of it can be undertaken in South Australia, some travel to interstate workshops is necessary.

Training is undertaken with the cooperative guidance of a suitable primary trainer.
Certification also requires significant supervision of practice, a practical assessment and writing which includes a publishable paper.
